SilverSneakers offers an innovative blend of physical activity, healthy lifestyle and socially oriented programming that allows older adults to take greater control of their health. SilverSneakers members receive:

The award-winning* SilverSneakers Fitness Program is a proven, results-oriented program that enables older adults, often burdened with chronic conditions, to take charge of their health and maintain an active, independent lifestyle.

SilverSneakers Classes

 
SilverSneakers group exercise classes are appropriate for older adults who are fit and active as well as those who are sedentary, intimidated, unfamiliar with exercise, entering post-rehabilitation programs and ALL those who enjoy a positive, upbeat social environment.

 
SilverSneakers® -- Muscular Strength & Range of Movement

SilverSneakers -- Muscular Strength & Range of Movement is a trademarked group exercise class designed for older adults. Exercises include work for all major and minor muscle groups addressing strength, flexibility, muscular endurance, balance, coordination, agility, speed and power.

The class format includes a warm-up and rhythmic range of movement stretch, work with resistance tools, cool down, final stretch and relaxation segment. It is an equipment-based, multi-level, total body conditioning class in which students use hand-held weights, elastic tubing with handles, a SilverSneakers play ball and a chair for standing and/or seated support.

All class formats and choreography options meet industry standards for older adult fitness outlined by all accrediting professional organizations and curriculum guidelines from the International Society for Aging and Physical Activity (ISAPA).

SilverSneakers Fitness Program Instructor Requirements
  • 18 Years of age
  • Possess a current CPR card
  • Attend the SilverSneakers - Muscular Strength Range of Movement instructor training workshop and repeat attendance a minimum of once every four years.
  • Attend the SilverSneakers instructor training workshop(s) for each group format being taught
    • Successfully complete each workshop for every group format being taught a minimum of once every four years
    • Successfully complete a minimum of one Axia sponsored continuing education workshop each year
  • Possess one of the following:
    • Possess a nationally recognized certification
      All certifications must meet the following criteria for SilverSneakers accreditation:
      • Requires possession of a current CPR card
      • Requires maintaining a formal re-certification process
        • Requires continuing education courses as criteria for re-certification
        • Requires current CPR card in order to receive re-certification
      • Certification must be available to the general population
    • Possess a 2 or 4 year degree in physical activity education, health or recreational education. (An instructor possessing a degree is required to maintain a minimum of 10 hours per year of continuing education credits).
  • Attend a minimum of one SilverSneakers instructional workshop each year

Additionally, aqua certifications will not be accepted for land based formats and vice versa land based certifications will not be accepted for aqua based formats.
